Chicago Tribune Gene Siskel
One of those rare films that communicates the exquisite joy of the moviemaking process.
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
A comedy of the ridiculous in which the ridiculous turns unexpectedly sublime. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
What Burton has made is a film which celebrates Wood more than it mocks him, and which celebrates, too, the zany spirit of 1950s exploitation films - in which a great title, a has-been star and a lurid ad campaign were enough to get bookings for some of the oddest films ever made. more
Washington Post Hal Hinson
Making a movie about the life of Ed Wood certainly qualifies as an impossible dream, but Burton has pulled it off with wit, imagination and something amazingly close to grace. more
Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov
The strangest biographical film ever made is also one of the most charming, melancholy and quirkily humorous films of the year. more
TV Guide Frank Lovece
Delightful, off-the-wall, and ultimately moving. more
Variety Staff [not credited]
Always engaging to watch and often dazzling in its imagination and technique, picture is also a bit distended, and lacking in weight at its center. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
The most interesting personality in Ed Wood is not the title character, but Bela Lugosi. So covered up with makeup that he's barely recognizable, Martin Landau gives a deeply-felt performance -- a eerie and stunning recreation of a man haunted by lost fame. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
Burton has evoked the surface of Ed Wood's life, but in a story about a man who loves angora and frilly panties, he has barely unbuttoned Wood's uniform. more
Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum
If, like the filmmakers, you're willing to settle for a myth that flatters your sensibilities and shortchanges the past, you're likely to find some agreeable kicks here. more

Film fans like me are grateful to Burton for making this film, as it introduced people to one of the greatest worst directors ever, Ed Wood. This movie about him is more than a mere documentary, it's got just as much dark comedy, charm, and style as his other films. It's brilliant and beautiful, and I highly recommend it, along with Ed Wood's films. more

I appreciated Burton meticulously recreating Plan 9 and the cast of characters who surrounded Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s career. I liked the black and white look of the film recreating the time period. Has anyone thought of colorizing this movie? Colorizing is a crappy thing to do to good or bad films from the black and white era. Perhaps it adds something to the notoriously bad effect of notoriously bad cult films though. It might be fun to watch this story of Ed Wood's life in a cheaply done colorized version too. Johnny Depp with that goofy grin full of teeth, those arch eyebrows, that... more

One of my favourite Tim Burton films and one of the best films of the 1990s. Ed Wood tells the tale of the upcoming director Ed Wood Jr and the problems he encounters on the way, which is just brilliantly told. We also get to see an unrecognisable Martin Landau in his Oscar-Winning role as Bela Logosi. Definatly one to check out! Highly recomended! more

A great original piece from Tim Burton. It is extremely different from his usual style, but handled with just as much care and passion. Johnny Depp plays a priceless Ed Wood and really makes the character quite sympathetic and naive. It has a great feel to it, as if you're not even watching a biopic, but something else entirely. more

An affectionate tribute to a fellow director unfortunately regarded as the worst in the business. The cast deliver excellent performances, especially the leads, Depp and Landau, in what is Burton's best and most unappreciated film of his career. more

Very moving and sensitive, I like old black and white monster flicks and Mr Wood was great at it..in a sense haha. This is still dark with Burton's style but still very strong and gets the story across beautifully, by the end of the film you will feel very close to all members involved and you wont want the story to end. A good cast of the usual Burton suspects really helps as they are all pretty kooky themselves hehe its a film of character actors and outcasts which suits Burton to a tee. The 'classic' feel of a proper black and white film isn't really there I must admit, Burton isn't a... more
