Rolling Stone Peter Travers
Exciting and then some, Face/Off blends the director's supercharged images of balletic brutality and spiritual catharsis with an off-the-wall humor that allows John Travolta and Nicolas Cage to really let it rip. more
San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle
It's the picture that proves action films don't have to be silly, that a few thrill sequences don't mean every other value has to be shot to pieces. more
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Rick Groen
The result is a genre picture that transcends the genre, that gleefully embraces four qualities alien to the bulk of its noisy brethren: (1) thematic texture; (2) kinetic grace; (3) visuals that toy with the mind even while dazzling the eye; and (3) performers who are permitted to act like something other than human wicks for the pyrotechnical bombast. more
Empire Adam Smith
Sure there are niggles, the most obvious being the length, which could have been reduced by trimming the prison sequences, but in the end this may be his finest moment so far which, by default, puts it in as having a strong claim on the title "best action movie ever made". Really. more
Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum
But it is the steady accretion of hundreds of small moments in this elegant, high-spirited, intensely satisfying production -- the director's third American movie, but the first to approach the dazzle of his Hong Kong stuff -- that, toted up, makes everything right about this des- perately welcome thriller. more

Before we go numb from such prefab excitement, here comes a mega-movie that actually delivers what mega-movies promise: strong characters, smart plotting, breathless action and a gimmick that hasn't been seen before. more
Newsweek David Ansen
Face/Off is a summer movie extraordinaire: violent, imaginative, crazily funny and, oddly moving. Hollywood has finally wised up and let Hong Kong auteur John Woo strut his stuff in all its undiluted, over-the-top glory. more
Slate David Edelstein
Face/Off is such a blast that at times I forgot I was watching a John Woo movie. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
A delirious mixture of spectacular gun battles, furious explosions and breathtaking stunt work, it's also one of the strangest stories to ever get the green light at a Hollywood studio. You have to take your hat off to Paramount Studios for allowing such inspired weirdness to see the light of day. more
Washington Post Stephen Hunter
As an example of the art of casting, the movie is brilliantly engineered. It allows two major stars to each play the showy villain for a time, and also for each to do an imitation of the other. more

Director, John Woo's American action masterpiece. It's utterly mind-blowing and endlessly heart pounding from start to finish. An incredibly spectacular action-packed thrill-ride. One of the best action movies you'll ever see. Incredible action sequences that you wont forget, from the opening gun battle at the airport to the concluding boat chase. A feast for the eyes and ears. An amazing ballet of bullets, brains, explosions, emotion and awesome performances by Nicholas Cage and John Travolta. more

Probably one of the best straight up action movies of the nineties. It's so bizarre, crazy and downright cool. While making no sense in the real world, it really does have its own sense of rules. The face swap aspect is such a great technique and is more interesting than it rightfully should be. Part of this goes to the performances from Nicolas Cage and John Travolta. Both do great eccentric imitations of each other and make convincing characters at the same time. The other reason it tends to be so well done is John Woo's amazing action sequences and directing. While this isn't always his... more

Castor Troy: When all else fails - fresh tactics! A high concept, action movie plot elevated by John Woo's direction and it's main players. The story surrounds an FBI agent Sean Archer, played by John Travolta and a terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage. Troy has previously murdered Archer's son, causing a devotion from Archer to catching him. Upon finally catching Troy and putting him into a coma, a discovery is learned that a bomb has been secretly placed in LA, and the only way to find out how to stop it, is through Castor Troy's brother, Pollux. This involves the latest in... more

I watched this film again as an adult, and it's not quite as good now, but Cage and Travolta did well here. Without them, this movie probably would've just been another bland John Woo outing. Ironically, it was probably Woo's best film concept. more

Can you live your enemy's life... The high point of the movie for me lies in Travolta and Cage's performances as I feel the film's violence was just about an overkill, the action sequences dragged out too long...but it's the duality between John and Nic that grabs me, they both equally play their respective characters brilliantly, John the relentless FBI agent and Nic public enemy number one and a freelance-terrorist... Your already using two big movie stars, no nevermind that you've got a pretty simple straightforward plot, the whole good cop trying to save the world from the bad guy... more

We already know this is a great action film with superb performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will just comment on the features: Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, set designs, special effects, weapons and the 'mimic' acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the original theatrical trailer. The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in... more
