It's a stunning Roman triumph.

It's that very rare feeling that you're settling into a movie whose individual elements are so finely attuned they fuse into a singular construct of pure entertainment. more

What matters for today's hero is the good fight, and Gladiator KOs us with a doozy. more
Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold
It lives up to the hype. Gladiator has its creaky moments, but it delivers a particular kind of visceral historical spectacle that movie audiences haven't seen in decades. more
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
If there's a soft spot in your heart for the sword-&-sandal epic -- and from the star rating above, I think you can guess where I stand -- then you'll swoon with giddy delight over Gladiator. more
Variety Todd McCarthy
John Mathieson's widescreen cinematography is magnificent, and the pacing across 2½ hours is well modulated. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
One extended guilty pleasure. more
San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle
At 2 1/2 hours, Gladiator is a long ride, but it doesn't drag. more
San Francisco Examiner Wesley Morris
As formulaic, but occasionally outré multiplex-bound behemoths go, Gladiator is a foaming beast. more
TV Guide Maitland McDonagh
Brawny, he-man spectacle combined with a surprisingly solid story and buttressed by excellent performances. more

Exciting action and solid acting (come back, Joaquin!), but undoes itself by simplifying things far more than it needs to. What could have been a rich exploration of morality, jealousy and power is whittled down to a tedious duel between good versus evil by the final act. Satisfying in the moment, but there isn't too much to chew on afterwards. more

This movie has so many powerful moments - it sends you from tears to joy, and the Hans Zimmer soundtrack adds to the emotion. Although a fictional (and very good) story, this movie marked the return to the historical epic genre with a great attempt at recreating ancient Rome, albeit borrowing features from various different periods. more

It took me forever to finally watch this longer than my attention span epic. I was not at all disappointed. This film transcends the genre, and can be cateorically lumped in with Ben-Hur, Spartacus, and The Ten Commandments, yet has a modernistic approach so volatile and real that you'll be quoting it for years. I still do. more

"The beating heart of Rome is not the marble of the Senate. Its the sand of the Colisseum. He'll bring them death, and they will love him for it." Gladiator ignited or rekindled a fascination with historical epics for a lot of people, and rightfully so. It hearkens back to movies like Spartacus and Ben-Hur, sweeping and grand film events that go all out in taking you back to a specific time and place. It's a very good movie. The story of a once great man who is stripped of his family and his honor and left with nothing but his desire for revenge and the gladiatorial arena, is simple and... more

It's been a long time since I've seen this and I really feel bad for ever saying it isn't good. While it's not flawless, it comes pretty close and is very much the Spartacus of its time. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe make a great team and show their devotion to movie making, blending a historical epic with a very tragic story of a man without anything left to lose. The action sequences are well done, of course, but I think the dramatic scenes are shot just as well. It's not my favorite movie from Ridley Scott, it's up there. more

Maximus: At my signal, unleash hell. While I still do find the amount of praise for this film somewhat strange, I do believe that this Ridley Scott sword and sandal epic is a damn fine film, complete with wonderful visuals, strong performances, and a fairly entertaining story. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus, a well regarded general of Ceaser Marcus Aurelius' Roman army. At the beginning of the film, Maximus has just defeated another empire and is ready to be crowned the next emperor of Rome; that is until Marcus' whiny son Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix, decides that he deserves it... more
