Intimate, heartfelt and wickedly funny, it's a movie whose impact lingers. more
Boston Globe Jay Carr
First and foremost, Good Will Hunting is a film riding young, exuberant energies. more
Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy
With its sweet soul and sharp mind, it's one of the most heartening films of the year.
The New York Times Elvis Mitchell
The script's bare bones are familiar, yet the film also has fine acting, steady momentum, a sharp eye and a very warm heart. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
Director Van Sant, who made the lyrical "Mala Noche," "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho," returns to his favorite hunting ground -- the subworlds of grimy, poetic lost boys -- and pulls us right in more
USA Today Mike Clark
Damon convincingly matches Williams recrimination for recrimination in this portrayal of mutual tough love, even with the latter giving what may be the best performance of his career. more
Newsweek David Ansen
Gus Van Sant, working from the tangy, well-written script, gets so much humor, grit and emotional truth out of this tale that the familiar formulas behind it simply fall away. more
Variety Emanuel Levy
This beautifully realized tale is always engaging and often quite touching. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
It's the individual moments, not the payoff, that make it so effective. more
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
You'd never guess this just-off-center movie was directed by indie hero Gus Van Sant. Maybe, like Will, he's casual about his gifts and feels no need to trot them out. more

I know a lot of people hold this film in high esteem, but I found it oh so boring. It's predictable and there are a lot of other similar movies that came before it. Plus none of the stars were really good in this movie. I say it's just a so-so drama. more

I'd always heard that this film was fantastic, and it didn't disappoint. The writers, Damon and Affleck, have written something of an essay on the insecurity and arrogance of the human condition by inventing three brilliant individuals, the characters portrayed by Skarsgard, Williams, and Damon, and make a statement by discussing each of their outlooks on life. We learn from the film that we each have things we're very good at as well as things we may not be so good at. The key to life is to use your talents to the best of your ability--to do otherwise is an insult to yourself. This is a... more

I actually managed to miss this one when it was first out, so it has been on the "to watch" pile for a while now. I have to say, although the acting and story is good, I was a little disappointed. Maybe because of all the hype, I expected better. May have liked it more, had I seen it earlier on. The cast are all very good, though. Even Minnie Driver, who normally puts me off - did not actually recognise her at first. Matt Damon is also good, though as usual, Robin Williams bugged me a little (though is not awful). more

It's a lonely feeling to finally watch such a popular and critically-acclaimed movie like Good Will Hunting, and be wondering what all the fuss was about. Sure it's been a few years since it was released, but movies this highly praised usually stand up to the test of time. So I didn't think it was amazing...but it was good. It's the kind of underdog story that pulls at the heartstrings, and I imagine that a large portion of its popularity comes from that fact. Matt Damon is just a great actor in every movie he ever does, Minnie Driver was aces, and Robin Williams made the rare decision to... more

This would get five stars, but I think Gus Vant Sant really sold himself short with the visual style of the film. His previous works were so personal and this just felt so alien to me. I think that is mainly due to the fact that that this is more of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's movie. They were really the one's that had the story all mapped out in their minds, you can see this same style when Affleck did Gone Baby Gone. Aside from that minor discrepancy, this is a perfect film. It has a great story and is rooted more in reality than practically any other coming of age story. It has all the... more

Wonderfully written, directed and acted inspirational film for mass audiences. It works perfectly with plenty of self realisation tearful moments which don't become too sickly. Scenes of Will and his friends are the real winners, with excellent dialogue and obvious real friendships brought forth from the performances. Williams gives one of his best performances. He tones down his comedy side but allows it out of the box for maximum effect. It's a real feel good film, with smarts and emotions conflicting head on, perfectly shown in the battle between Lecturer Skarsgard and therapist... more
