If you think about Jaws for more than 45 seconds you will recognize it as nonsense, but it's the sort of nonsense that can be a good deal of fun, if you like to have the wits scared out of you at irregular intervals. more

What this movie is about, and where it succeeds best, is the primordial level of fear. The characters, for the most part, and the non-fish elements in the story, are comparatively weak and not believable.

Steven Spielberg's mechanical thriller is guaranteed to make you scream on schedule (John Williams's score even has the audience reactions programmed into the melodies), particularly if your tolerance for weak motivation and other minor inconsistencies is high. more

After numerous years this tale of shark on beach goer vengeance is still as thrill imbibing as it was when it was released in 1975. This classic stays classic with the help of the beautiful score by John Williams, the superb give and take between the characters Quint, Matt Hooper, and Chief Martin Brody, and the panic that came from the special effects of a large animal throwing off blood from its snout and into the deep recesses of the sea. Easily one of the best horror movies in existence, yes, horror movie. Everyone tries to lump this into the thriller category, but only because it's so good. I don't know about everyone else, but this movie was made to scare the hell out of people. It has all the classic scenarios and cliches of the genre beforehand, but much like Chinatown it uses them to its advantage. The acting is great, you couldn't ask for a better casting at the time. Hmm, what do you say about a movie that everybody's seen? Not very much and something different, hopefully. To appreciate what it is that makes Jaws so great, one has only to imagine what the film would be like were Spielberg to remake it today, with a bottomless budget and Hollywood's A-list at his disposal. You'll get the behind the scenes from Spielberg, the actors, photographers, and the producers. Jaws was Stephen Spielberg's first hit and after his initial reluctance to release his movies on DVD, it finally makes its DVD debut. We all know the story, a great white shark terrorizes the waters off of Amity Island. The movie is based on Peter Benchey's best-selling novel. This is one of the rare instances where a movie is actually better than the book it was based on.
