One of the most effective thrillers ever made. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
The first is the best. When it comes to this kind of thriller, no movie has been able to top Jaws, although many have tried. And, as the years go by, it seems increasingly unlikely that anything will come close. more

It was the complete nightmare that invented the "summer blockbuster", launched the genius on a global scale and delivered an astonishingly effective thriller built on a very primal level: fear. more
Entertainment Weekly Ty Burr
Steven Spielberg overcame the lumpy plotting of Peter Benchley's novel to create an efficient, graceful fright machine in Jaws. more
Variety Staff (Not Credited)
Robert Shaw absolutely magnificent as a coarse fisherman finally hired to locate the Great White Shark; and Richard Dreyfuss, in another excellent characterization as a likeable young scientist. more
TV Guide Staff (Not Credited)
From the outrageously frightening opening--in which a beautiful young woman skinny-dipping in the moonlight is devoured by the unseen shark--to the claustrophobic climax aboard Quint's fishing boat, Spielberg has us in his grip and rarely lets go. more
The New York Times Vincent Canby
If you think about Jaws for more than 45 seconds you will recognize it as nonsense, but it's the sort of nonsense that can be a good deal of fun, if you like to have the wits scared out of you at irregular intervals. more
Chicago Tribune Gene Siskel
What this movie is about, and where it succeeds best, is the primordial level of fear. The characters, for the most part, and the non-fish elements in the story, are comparatively weak and not believable.
Chicago Reader Dave Kehr
Steven Spielberg's mechanical thriller is guaranteed to make you scream on schedule (John Williams's score even has the audience reactions programmed into the melodies), particularly if your tolerance for weak motivation and other minor inconsistencies is high. more

After numerous years this tale of shark on beach goer vengeance is still as thrill imbibing as it was when it was released in 1975. This classic stays classic with the help of the beautiful score by John Williams, the superb give and take between the characters Quint, Matt Hooper, and Chief Martin Brody, and the panic that came from the special effects of a large animal throwing off blood from its snout and into the deep recesses of the sea. Even though it's been nearly forty years since the original, it still holds up as one of the scariest films of all time. It preys on the uncommon but... more

Easily one of the best horror movies in existence, yes, horror movie. Everyone tries to lump this into the thriller category, but only because it's so good. I don't know about everyone else, but this movie was made to scare the hell out of people. It has all the classic scenarios and cliches of the genre beforehand, but much like Chinatown it uses them to its advantage. The acting is great, you couldn't ask for a better casting at the time. I think my favorite aspect of the filming is that the movie gets brighter the more you go on, unlike the Hitchcock classics beforehand. It really... more

Hmm, what do you say about a movie that everybody's seen? Not very much and something different, hopefully. To appreciate what it is that makes Jaws so great, one has only to imagine what the film would be like were Spielberg to remake it today, with a bottomless budget and Hollywood's A-list at his disposal. It's really an object lesson in making a virtue of necessity. Spielberg's use of suggestive horror to cover for his malfunctioning mechanical shark is so brilliant that, when we finally do get a good look at 'Bruce', he comes as something of an anti-climax. Of course, nowadays he'd... more

The first and best Great white flick for sure, still scares and spooks you out even today, the vast open sea....cold, dark, unforgiving, deep and who knows whats beneath yr naked helpless limbs as they sway about in the blue, very eerie thought even as I type this haha A brilliant cast and a genius filmmaker made this a clasic of epic proportions, with a slow start that just builds and builds, teasing you with attacks from nothing but a shadow with claret filling the sea and ending with an amazing hunt for the beast on a small fishing boat with three brave locals, its pure gold. The fact... more

Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this? ) Well, I bought the DVD dts and I think you'll like the extras such as the outtakes, deleted scenes, and especially an excellent documentary. You'll get the behind the scenes from Spielberg, the actors, photographers, and the producers. In today's film world this movie could be made rather easily, but back then you'll see the tremendous undertaking that went into this production. The movie itself, of course, is just amazing. At one point Spielberg says that the shark is the star, but the scenes on the boat will show you 3 stars at the top of their... more

Jaws was Stephen Spielberg's first hit and after his initial reluctance to release his movies on DVD, it finally makes its DVD debut. We all know the story, a great white shark terrorizes the waters off of Amity Island. The movie is based on Peter Benchey's best-selling novel. This is one of the rare instances where a movie is actually better than the book it was based on. In Mr. Benchey's novel, there is are some extraneous sections such as an affair between Ellen Brody and Hooper that really don't add to the story. The movie streamlines the book and the changes made bringing it to the... more
