Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
The interesting thing is that Hiller has saved the movie without substantially changing anything in the book. more
The New York Times Vincent Canby
It looks to be clean and pure and without artifice, even though it is possibly as sophisticated as any commercial American movie ever made. more
Variety Staff (Not Credited)
It is generally successful on all artistic levels, propelled by the best-selling Erich Segal novel written from the original screenplay. more
Time Stefan Kanfer
"What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died?" You can say that her movie, though soapy, is better than her silly book. more
TV Guide Staff (Not Credited)
Love Story is actually better than Segal's previously released best-seller (written from his screenplay in order to promote the film). But then that's not saying much. more

The best romantic drama of the seventies! It's sweet, tragic, dramatic, intense, and very modern too. I loved it and if you like sad romantic dramas you will love it too. I especially loved O'Neal in this movie. more

I better stop watching 40-year-old movies. When I see them today, they seem disappointing compared to today's movies, and there are a few of these 1970's era movies I have down-rated from my initial rating. Very simple script. Still you should see it - it made a big impact in the early 70's. more

It's exactly what it aspires to be, an extremely honest and believable romance drama. It has great dialogue and acting, the chemistry between Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw is what makes it work as well as it does. It's sort of the reason all movies like it since seem cliched, there's no better tear jerker like this. You feel for these people and automatically relate to them. more

July 2010 - This is a very sentimental romantic movie and perhaps the best example of that genera. As a movie has not much to offer except of course an nice view of the 60s, Harvard and Boston then. But as many such romantic dramas it is not so hard to let your emotions flow with the movie and be touched by the ideal, ferry tale sentimentality of the story. more

I've seen this video countless times. More times, than any other movie. And every time I watch it, it moves me to tears. To experience a love so true and so deep is a miracle and to lose it... it's beyond me. But to even experience it and see a glimpse of it (from this movie) is a wonder enough. The love story between rich Harvard hockey-player Oliver Barrett IV (played by Ryan O'Neal) and smart-mouthed Radcliffe gal Jennifer Cavilleri (played by Ali McGraw) is one of those once-in-a-lifetime love stories... captured on film. These two star-crossed lovers who are from the opposite ends of... more

Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this? ) I have seen it countless times since if first came out in 1970 and was so thrilled to finally get my personal video of it this Christmas. If you love a love story, this is the penultimate one. Oliver, the Harvard jock, and Jennifer, the poor and smart-mouthed music student from Rhode Island, touch the deepest parts of our hearts. Theirs is the love story that we all want---two people completely dedicated to each other. They survive class differences and parental disapproval because they love each other. How wonderful to see the heart-warming... more
