L.A. Weekly Hazel-Dawn Dumpert
The story's charming, the set pieces are wildly inventive, and even the throwaway one-liners, about everything from movie-animation pioneer Ray Harryhausen to the old Oscar Meyer jingle, are hilarious. more
Rolling Stone Peter Travers
It's the Pixar animators who keep grown-ups as riveted as the kids with visual marvels that dazzle and delight. more
New Times (L.A.) Robert Wilonsky
As giddy and antic as any great Warner Bros. cartoon of the 1930s and '40s -- it bears seeing more than once, if only to allow for the sight gags that play second fiddle to the plot, a rarity in animation -- but also resonant and real. In other words, it's the perfect movie. more
The New York Times A.O. Scott
There hasn't been a film in years to use creative energy as efficiently as Monsters, Inc. more
Newsweek David Ansen
A terrific piece of work: smart, inventive and executed with state-of-the-art finesse.
Chicago Tribune Mark Caro
The climax, featuring what's essentially a suspended roller coaster of closet doors, is as thrilling as it is imaginative. more
Miami Herald Rene Rodriguez
Movies like Monsters, Inc. literally make you feel like a kid again, marveling at the joyously inventive sights before you, and that's a feat that should not be taken lightly. more
New York Post Lou Lumenick
Smart, funny and ingeniously detailed with terrific vocal teamwork. more
Philadelphia Inquirer Carrie Rickey
"Shrek" is a scintilla funnier, "Toy Story 2" a hair's breadth more poignant, but "MI" is every bit as imaginative and lovable as these other contemporary animation classics. more
USA Today Mike Clark
Though the comedy is sometimes more frenetic than inspired and viewer emotions are rarely touched to any notable degree, the movie is as visually inventive as its Pixar predecessors. more

Just a really good movie. It's a great fantasty concept, that's to my knowledge incredibly original and a subject matter that anyone can relate to. The monsters are way too funny the way they live blue collar jobs scaring children through vortex doors. The voice talents are extremely effective here; Billy Crystal is so much more outrageous with his delivery when he has a giant eyeball. This is clearly a movie that's targeted for anyone who's ever been scared of the dark or the boogey man; so basically every living soul. Pixar didn't cheap out and go for the easy to make cornfest that this... more

A second viewing of Monsters, Inc. definitely increased my appreciation for it. Just like any other computer-generated cartoon (this one was done amazingly well, by the way) I spent a good chunk of my time trying to figure out who did the voices, but the premise here was pretty interesting. Monsters, Inc. skillfully straddled the line between kids entertainment and being funny enough to keep the parents of said kids looking at their watches every 5 minutes. Loved the Ray Harryhausen reference and at risk of sounding like a total wuss, Boo was incredibly cute and as funny as the rest of the... more

Sulley: Mike, this isn't Boo's door. Mike: Boo? What's Boo? Sulley: That's... what I decided to call her. Is there a problem? Mike: Sulley, you're not supposed to name it. Once you name it, you start getting attached to it. Now put that thing back where it came from or so help me... You still think this is about that stupid scare record? Mike: Well... I did. Right up until you... chuckled... like that... And now I'm thinking I should just get out of here. more

I really appreciate when people take time to write good story for animated features, which appeals to kids and adults alike. This is a good, clean, very funny film that will appeal to all audiences. It's a must see. more

Before anyone starts saying this has not been released yet and there cannot be a review of the Bluray edition let me tell you this, this movie has been available in Japan and Mexico for quite some time now, and I was able to get a copy of the Mexican edition, which was at one time, identical to the one to be released in the US. It is a 3 disc edition (2 BD plus DVD copy of the movie), this has now been changed to a 4 disc set in the US to include the additional digital copy. Disc one starts with an intro by director Pete Docter, in which he pretty much explains all the contents in this... more

Admittedly, I am a fan of Pixar's work. Their artists have done some incredible animated features over the years. Between the "Toy Story" movies and "A Bug's Life," they have managed in a short time to build an impressive track record. Their shorts are also among the best ever produced. So my expectations going into this movie were very high. The story concerns the monsters in your closet. The theory being that their world runs of the energy produced by children's screams. Sulley (John Goodman) is number one at getting screams. His main rival (Steve Buschemi) will do anything to gain the... more
