A film of such cyclonic visual and emotional power, of such dazzling virtuosity and shattering humanity, that it is difficult to endure, yet alone describe. Savagely beautiful and savagely true, Saving Private Ryan is an excruciating masterpiece. more

What every one says is true, the 1st 30 min. of this might be some of the greatest war footage ever shot, period: the murderously surreal D-Day landing by the Allies in 1944. The rest of the film's concerned with a group of men who decide to hold a little bridge somewhere in France AND to keep alive one man, no matter the cost, to see him home. A war movie they couldn't've made during the war or even right after it, because this war story was meticulously, surreptitiously crafted in the style of the Twilight Zone (or, more precisely, Spielberg's own Amazing Stories), being a postcard from... more

I'm sure i'm not the only one who feels that it's a crime that this is only remembered for the Normandy sequence. Quite frankly, this has such a great story that it could've worked just asmuc and been as strong without it. The great ensemble cast and characters make you truly invested in the story. Steven Spielberg was always going to be the Movie Brat member to make his war epic more of an action adventure story, but there still are a lot of great lasting themes and powerful moments. I'm pretty sure this was the movie that started Spielberg's current visual style with slightly blown out... more

Spielberg's take on World War 2, or wars in general if you will, is the ultimate film on the topic. There are a few minor stereotypes, especially when it comes to the Germans, but Spielberg leaves no doubt that everyone loses in war, and everyone is playing dirty, some more than others. The first 20 minutes of the flashback, the landing at the Normandy on D-Day, are so stunningly brutal, true and disturbing, they could be watched as a stand alone, maybe even should be taught at school. After that, the movie goes into a slightly more conventional direction, but never the less sticks to its... more

"Earn this... Earn it." Begins with probably the most brutal war scene made, the D-Day. The first time I saw it, I was nailed to my seat. Intense, raw and jaw-dropping. A harsh vision of the reality of war. But when I've come to grow a little bit older, I came to realize that this is a Pro-American propaganda movie. All of Capt Miller's gang are from different backgrounds, ethnicities, religion. Portrayed as genuine heroes. The German's are once again portrayed as evil subhumans, who know nothing about warfare tactics and deserve nothing more than a bullet. The plot is a bit farfetched and... more

Director, Steven Spielberg's triumph. A masterpiece. A stirring, riveting and electrifying war drama. One of the best war films of the twenyth century. The battle scenes are the best and most brutal ever filmed. Spielberg shows us the the harsh, grim reality of violence and what effect it has on people. Magnificent and unforgettable. A film that will be treasured, respected and remembered for years to come. Performed by a great cast. Tom Hanks is brilliant. Matt Damon is teriffic. Edward Burns is excellent. Tom Sizemore is fantastic. This movie is a true salut to the men who fought and... more

Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this? ) "Saving Private Ryan" is, by all accounts, an American masterpiece and one of the premier World War II films. Its release on Blu-Ray has been highly anticipated and, for the most part, it doesn't disappoint. First of all, the transfer is every bit as astonishingly sharp as expected. I am by no means a videophile, but there didn't appear to be a single moment of artificial enhancement of the film. The print is appropriately accompanied by a slight sheen of grain whilst still retaining a high level of detail. As far as I'm concerned this is an easy... more
