This is not your average family cartoon. Shrek is jolly and wicked, filled with sly in-jokes and yet somehow possessing a heart. more
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
An adorable, infectious work of true sophistication. more
New York Post Lou Lumenick
An unqualified triumph. more

The humor of the script constantly confounds expectations, and yet Shrek still manages to say all the right things to children.
USA Today Susan Wloszczyna
A riotous and wee bit PG-racy computer-animated family fable, is the most thoroughly enjoyable cartoon feature since "Toy Story" burst out of its box. more
Variety Todd McCarthy
This spirited and often very funny lark accomplishes something that most films in the bygone Hollywood studio era used to do but is remarkably rare in today's world of niche markets: It offers entertainment equally to viewers from 4 to 104. more
Washington Post Stephen Hunter
It's wondrous, it's fabulous, it's -- all but unprecedented. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
A movie that appeals to the eye, mind, heart and funny bone; that's a pretty good quadruple for any movie. more

Lives happily ever after because it's such a feisty but good natured embrace of the inner ogre in everyone. more
Portland Oregonian Kim Morgan
Funny, irreverent and moving, the unconventional Shrek may mock fairy tales, but in the process, creates its own. more

I used to LOVE Shrek, back when I watched an average of like 2 movies a year. I guess my standards were lower or something because I cannot watch this anymore without gagging at the barrage of cultural references I'm met with. For nostalgia purposes, though, yeah, why not. 3.5 stars. more

A fantastic satirical fable that cleverly subverts fairy tales, providing endless fun for kids and pure delight for adults with its astonishing visuals and acid humor. An extremely funny animation that is also enchanting and sweet. more

A family-friendly classic. Shrek is heart-warming, fun, and the animation just jumps off the screen. I can't believe I nearly went 10 years without seeing it. Great jokes for kids and parents about all the other fairy tales, and yet, it is a fairly tale... but, on top of the classic quest story, you've got Eddie Murphy riffing the whole way through. It was great to see many of his legendary standup themes recycled into the film. Beautiful film, exciting and unconventional and with a good moral. One that everyone should see. (Duh!) more

The thing that I always find funny with Mike Myers' movies is that they all have an expiration date. Before the age of 14, you will probably find him to be funny. However, once rational thought sets in and you discover a little bit about life, you will realize how much of a buffoon he is and how cheap he will get. This is no exception. Shrek is nothing more than a cruel parody of harmless children's stories. more

This is not your average family cartoon. Sure the film's technical expertise was great...still, all the craft in the world wouldn't have made this work if the story hadn't been fun and the characters so enjoyable... more

Shrek has grossed over 260 million in the theaters (as of Aug. 14, 2001). That's within .05% of the top grossing animation of all times, Toy Story (@ 262 million). Shrek is a great 3D movie. The 3D computer animation is second, only to Final Fantasy. The story is more involving than what I expected. The voices were well cast and performed. The whole film awsome. I'm sure you're aware of that or you wouldn't be reading this now. It has both adult (clean adult) and kids humor. The writers plagerized just about everyone and it was hilarious. Okay, now for the DVD. This DVD is created as 2... more
