Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
We've seen this done before, but seldom so well, or at such a high pitch of energy. more
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
The film takes off from formula elements-it's yet another variation on "Die Hard"-but it manipulates those elements so skillfully, with such a canny mixture of delirium and restraint, that I walked out of the picture with the rare sensation that every gaudy thrill had been earned. more
The New Yorker Anthony Lane
The result is clean, delirious, and, yes, speedy-the best big-vehicle-in-peril movie since Clouzot's "The Wages of Fear." more
Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan
De Bont and his team have turned in a visually sophisticated piece of mayhem that makes the implausible plausible and keeps the thrills coming.
Time Richard Schickel
The movie has two virtues essential to good pop thrillers. First, it plugs uncomplicatedly into lurking anxieties -- in this case the ones we brush aside when we daily surrender ourselves to mass transit in a world where the loonies are everywhere. Second, it is executed with panache and utter conviction. more
Rolling Stone Peter Travers
If you're looking for action movie heaven, try Speed, a crackling blend of suspense and fun that gives you the rush of a runaway roller coaster. more
TV Guide Staff(not credited)
Acclaimed cinematographer Jan De Bont's directing debut is a mindless, implausible, and thoroughly gripping adventure movie. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
It's an ingenious premise that first-time director Jan De Bont has turned into a tremendously well-executed motion picture. more
Empire Philip Thomas
There are very few action movies that cut to the chase quite as quickly as Speed and then have the stamina to keep it up for nearly two hours. more
The New York Times Elvis Mitchell
This film's dialogue isn't much more literate than a bus schedule, but its plotting is smart and breathless enough to make up for that. more

"Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do!?" The action movie of the 80's is without a doubt 'Die Hard'. The movie that defines action in the first decade of the millenium change is in my opinion 'The Matrix' (I know it's made in '99 but you do understand I have to get 'Speed' here in my introduction and besides I first saw 'The Matrix' in 2000...). So what comes to mind when thinking of action films that defines and changes the genre for better in the 90's? 'Speed'.... more

I'm sure i've said bad things about Speed in the past, but it really is such a beautiful display of pulse-pounding adrenaline. Speed taps into the aspect of action movies that never gets old. The suspense oriented plot, endless use of big stunts and explosions is ridiculously well done. You can't go wrong with a deranged terrorist as your villain; especially when it's played by Dennis Hopper. However, it's Keanu Reeves that conquers all by bringing his intensity, thrill seeking nature and cocky attitude to the table. This is the movie that truly defined him as the action star he is today... more

There are few blockbuster action movies that come close to being as good as this one is. Great villain, great hero and great direction really get you involved in what ended up being a smarter movie than you would've thought it could be. Jack Traven could kick Jack Bauer's ass! June 30, MMX: Oh man, I never tire of this movie! I saw it again and it was just as rollicking a good time as it was when I first saw it. The story is really simple and elegant, the music really pumps you up and the explosions really land. I really like the villain too: he's a bitter bomb tech who, unhappy with his... more

What a concept! A bus has to keep above 50 miles an hour or it will blow up. The perfect excuse to have ridiculous stunts, cars getting run over, and other stuff exploding really well! Keanu Reeves has buffed up to look the best I think I've ever seen him. Dennis Hopper is a kick ass villain, and Sandra Bullock is wonderful eye candy; and yes, she portrays a fine lady in constant distress. more

Amazon Verified Purchase ( What's this? ) Blu-rays are about picture and sound quality. A review of Blu-ray edition of an old 1994 movie should be addressing the issue of added entertainment value when upgrading to the Blu-ray edition, not the story itself, which we are all familiar with. A dvd of this movie cost a bomb back in the day. It has been shown countless times on free to air TV. I saw this movie in a theatre way back in 1994. Nostalgia made me buy Blu-rays of this movie along with Blu-ray Black Hawk Down, both at the same price. Naturally, I saw Black Hawk Down first, reserving... more

Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer loops a videotape of him and the guys working while they goof off "I saw this in a movie where there was a bus and it had to keep it's SPEED above 50 and if it's SPEED dropped, the bus would explode! I think it was called: The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down!" Even Homer realises the cleverness of Jan De Bont's tautly-directed action thriller. Starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper and Jeff Daniels, Speed is one of those rare films that comes along every now and then that proves to be better than standard fare. Essentially one big... more
