Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy
Phantom may not be the best entry in the series, but it's the most technically accomplished, and it makes you as hungry for the next film as you've been for this one.
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
An astonishing achievement in imaginative filmmaking. more
Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington
A highly entertaining and visually breathtaking movie, capable at times of rocking and delighting you. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
Not a masterpiece, but it's an example of how imagination, craftsmanship, and technological bravura can fashion superior entertainment out of something that is far from flawless. more
Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold
Avoid the hype, just go enjoy the movie more
The New York Times Elvis Mitchell
It's up to snuff. It sustains the gee-whiz spirit of the series. more
Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt
The computer-driven effects are impressive, but the adventure is hampered by a flat screenplay, dull acting, and just a hint as to why the dark side of the Force will eventually transform cute little Anakin into the evil Darth Vader. more
USA Today Susan Wloszczyna
Let the killjoys squawk. Lucas has proved he has the Naboos to pull it off again. And again. And again. more
The A.V. Club Keith Phipps
Despite a shaky start and the presence of questionable elements throughout, by the time it arrives at its finale -- which copies Return Of The Jedi's triple-climax structure -- The Phantom Menace has won its place alongside the original Star Wars trilogy. more
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
Fails to recapture the elemental magic of Star Wars, and that, ironically, is because it represents the coarse culmination of the original film's adrenaline aesthetic. more

I saw this film on theatrical release in and was very disappointed. Of course, alot of the disappointment initially had to do with the incredible hype build-up that accompanied the new trilogy. Nothing could have lived up to the public's expectations. That having been said, The Phantom Menace is disappointing not so much because it stinks, but because, I fell, with some additional tweaking, it could have been much much better. Its almost as if Lucas got the plot ideas and character concepts developed to a schematic level and then sort of lost interest in them and did not develop them any... more

I do not understand the lousy reviews this film recieved when it was released in theatres. Most critics complained about the lack of character developement. What they failed to understand is that The Phantom Menace is part one of a six part story. The characters will develop in the series next two installments. The special effects in The Phantom Menace were outstanding. The pod race and the jedi's duel with Darth Maul are worth buying this video. I will admit that the political shenanigans of Senator Palpatine will be better understood if you have seen the original trilogy. Star Wars... more

When I first heard about these prequel stories back in 1980, I have waited since for this movie to come out. And now...here it is-here it is, indeed... Well, I must confess this Star Wars installment dose not have that same "edge" if you will, that the Classical Trilogy has. The acting by Jake LLoyd and Natalie Portman was not up to par-hardly. I think much more screen time should have been given to the evil Darth Sidious and Darth Maul- and less screen time given to Jar Jar Binks. Truth be told, this movie has more of a Disney look (shudder) than being a Lucasfilm. Now, with that said,... more
