While not the Godfather (and what is really...besides Godfather 2, but I digress) The Cotton Club is a great entertaining little movie. All controversy about it's making aside Coppola and Evans managed to craft a thoroughly entertaining film with several great scenes and mostly solid performances (I'm looking at you Nic Cage and James Remar). I can say however, that this is hands down, the single best tap dancing gangster film ever made. more

Another underrated work from Francis Ford Coppola. I feel that this movie's triumphs outnumber its shortcomings, and it is a satisfying experience overall. It gets off to a weak start, and within the first twenty minutes I thought I was in for a tedious watch, but it really finds itself in the second act. The screenplay went through numerous re-writes and alterations during the process of making the film, and that's definitely evident. Nevertheless, it pieces together nicely and aside from some poor dialogue, it's actually a well-written movie. As I have come to expect from Coppola, it is... more

Being a jazz fanatic, a fan of gangster films and enamored with Diane Lane since Rumblefish, of course I'm going to love this movie. I know that I'm swimming up-stream against the critics (and many movie buffs) - but it?s a near-perfect film IMHO. The half-star off, is for length. Francis could have edited out at least 10 minutes. more

Another Coppola/Puzo collaboration, this was one of the most single entertaining movies I have ever seen; besides being a good story, the club setting allowed several different talented performers from tap dancers to jazz singers do their thing. Richard Gere wowed me by performing his own cornet solos, and this is the one role that Nicholas Cage actually shows emotion and talent in. more

The lines between jazz, bootlegging and race are blurred in Francis Ford Coppolas's wonderful 1984 feature set during the late 20's and early 30's in Harlem, NYC at the world famous Cotton Club. At long last, MGM has finally released The Cotton Club on its "Contemporary Classics" series. What this means is that die hard fans will get a reasonably priced DVD in the widescreen format but with virtually no extras included. MGM is notorious for being stingy on their DVDs. The theatrical trailer is included. You can watch the film in French or read French or Spanish subtitles. Nice hard case... more
