Bale again brilliantly personifies all the deep traumas and misgivings of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne. A bit of Hamlet is in this Batman. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
"Batman" isn't a comic book anymore. Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is a haunted film that leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy. It creates characters we come to care about. That's because of the performances, because of the direction, because of the writing, and because of the superlative technical quality of the entire production. more
Chicago Tribune Michael Phillips
Sensational, grandly sinister and not for the kids, The Dark Knight elevates pulp to a very high level. more
TV Guide Maitland McDonagh
That Ledger stands out in such a powerhouse ensemble is a tribute to his radically unhinged interpretation of a familiar character: The lank hair tinged seaweed green, the darting tongue and faint lisp that call constant attention to the ghastly rictus of his mouth, the nightmarishly smudged make up… taken together, they make previous Jokers feel like, well, jokes. more

When was the last time you saw a blockbuster that was impeccably executed and simultaneously thought-provoking, audacious and unnerving while consistently being fun and entertaining? more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
Christopher Nolan has provided movie-goers with the best superhero movie to-date, outclassing previous titles both mediocre and excellent, and giving this franchise its "The Empire Strikes Back." more
Charlotte Observer Lawrence Toppman
succeeds as an action film, character study and metaphor for our own terrorism-obsessed time. more

Twisted, tortured, terrifying - and terrific. more

Ledger's performance is monumental, but The Dark Knight lives up to it. Nolan cements his position as Hollywood's premier purveyor of blockbuster smarts – and the Batbike is kinda cool, too. more
Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sean Axmaker
With The Dark Knight, the cinematic superhero spectacle comes closest to becoming modern myth, a pulp tragedy with costumed players and elevated stakes and terrible sacrifices. It's the new gold standard for superhero noir. more

God damn! Just when I thought Batman Begins was THE Batman movie done right, The Dark Knight comes along and knocks that movie and myself on our respective asses. First off, and I hate to go along with every entertainment news show here but Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker definitely lives up to the hype it's getting, so much to the point where I was actually afraid of him at points. He was scary and hysterical all at the same time (I was laughing hysterically at the end of the hospital sequence) and I pity the sorry son of a bitch who has to follow that act if they ever decide to... more

A very good film with an awful lot of hype, and just about lives up to it. This is how we want to see Batman, a much darker version than most of the comical offerings from years ago. This is intense crime/action/drama at it's best with some neat twists, great action scenes and wonderful acting talent on show. It's a little long but you barely notice as it progresses at a great pace with lots of great plot lines. See it as soon as you can! more

Everything that made Batman Begins a great movie was only improved and/or kept on par with this. The directing is even better from Christopher Nolan, he understands the necessary way to go about a superhero movie like no one else. You have two major character arcs in this story (Batman's limits to bring justice and Harvey Dent's descent to evil) as well as over four major villians and it is still able to be handled with ease. Christian Bale not only plays the Bruce Wayne that Gotham sees him as, but he is also its greatest detective and justice breeder. Then there is also the "real" Bruce... more

A masterpiece. Director, Christopher Nolan continues to bring out the best in the series the way it was meant to be. It ranks with crime classics like Heat and The Departed and marks as the best and most mature comic book adaptation ever. A stunning, riveting, powerful and brilliant epic classic. A compelling, electrifying, astonishing and breathtaking film. A spectacular edge of your seat action-packed thrill-machine. Loads of captivating suspense, heat-stopping tension and mind-blowing action. It's a magnificent and ingenious piece of work that's shockingly disturbing and a unique... more

One of the best films of 2008 and the best superhero film ever. Heath Ledger is certain to win the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his truly mad performance as the joker. Yet there is Method to his Madness, this crazed character does make sense in his own twisted thinking. The film more than the original poses some extreemly difficult ethical questions concerning right and wrong, hero and villian, questions that are not nescessarily answered. Once again Nolan has redfined the comic book genre and has continued the most original and masterly film series out today. See this film! more

Very good, but a bit too long. The Joker was clearly the star of the movie. Any scene with him in it was better than any without him. Great plot, great acting, and it was nice to see an end to the eternally poorly cast Rachel Dawes character. The Dark Knight stands along with Spider-man 2 and X-Men 2 as one of my favorite superhero movies. more
