External critics' reviews

San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle
The Devil's Advocate is a sharp, suspenseful and completely satisfying movie. more
Newsweek Jack Kroll
Written with brio and staged rousingly by director Taylor Hackford, the film is good, kitschy fun -- after all, how can you hate a movie that casts litigators as the new legions of Lucifer? more
Washington Post Stephen Hunter
Unlike so many pagan entertainments that seem to have no moral center as they blow things up, this one in fact does. It's very small, but it's there. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
The Devil's Advocate is a highly-enjoyable motion picture that's part character study, part supernatural thriller, and part morality play. more
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
Embarrassingly entertaining. more
L.A. Weekly Ella Taylor
Subtlety was never Taylor Hackford's long suit, but that's an asset in this mischievously fortissimo poke at lawyering and capitalist competition. more
The New York Times Elvis Mitchell
The film uses morphing and Rick Baker's monster effects strikingly, but it also keeps its gimmicks well tethered to reality. more
Slate David Edelstein
But there are scenery chewers and there are Michelin-gourmet scenery chewers, and Pacino has a three-star feast. more
Variety Todd McCarthy
A fairly entertaining supernatural potboiler that finally bubbles over with a nearly operatic sense of absurdity and excess. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
The story (adapted from Andrew Neiderman's novel by Jonathan Lemkin and Tony Gilroy) is surprisingly well-handled, given its rather crazy premise. more

Rotten Tomatoes Conner R
A ridiculously idiotic plot, but Al Pacino plays one amazing Satan. The story makes little sense and is extremely corny. Along with that, Keanu Reeves plays another one of his brainless roles. It's just a weird 90s movie that has no real emotion or significance. more
Rotten Tomatoes Jani H
"What about love? - Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." The movie starts in a good way, keeps the viewers focus on and is entertaining for most of the time. But then it's time for the end scenes and Pacino's monologues, which also are perfect examples of overacting at its best/worst. "The Devil's Advocate" has its moments but it's too inconsistent. The actors do a decent job in overall but the movie lacks something that would've made it memorable. "Are we negotiating? - Always." more
Rotten Tomatoes Al S
An awsome and incrediable movie. Brilliant, stylish, gripping and very original. A breathtaking edge of your seat supernatural thriller with a double-twist ending that you have to see to belive. Al Pacino gives a unforgettable powerhouse performance. A devilishly charming and witty character. more
Rotten Tomatoes Stephen M
A silly thriller with mildly satirical pretensions, whose plot seems to have been suggested purely by the titular turn of phrase. Entertaining, nevertheless, but I'll stick with "Rosemary's Baby" or "The Omen" for my satanic kicks. more
Rotten Tomatoes moon r
ooooo, there's a idea...al pacino as satan...a casting director's dream! and poor al...another film in which he doesn't have to act, but simply be himself! watch for the rape scene...it'll scare the bejesus out of you! more
Rotten Tomatoes Daniel J D
An altogether-great film. Good plot, well-acted, well-composed soundtrack, great lines. Granted, I could've done without the sex scenes and the first scene, but it was an incredible movie, regardless. more
