The cast is a delight, but it's Willis who is the film's true "fifth element," giving it life, depth and humanity. more
Washington Post Rita Kempley
An entertaining tangle of pop aesthetic and comic book myth that occasionally bogs down, but manages to be ingratiating for all its defects. more
Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov
Although the film tends to suffer from a severe case of overt preachiness in the third reel (shades of James Cameron's "The Abyss"), it's still a wonderfully visual, exciting ride. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
I would not have missed seeing this film, and I recommend it for its richness of imagery. But at 127 minutes, which seems a reasonable length, it plays long. more
Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington
It's ludicrous, but it's fun. Besson is a filmmaker so in love with his own daffy excesses that he's able to pull us, laughing, right into his world of loony pop.
San Francisco Chronicle Peter Stack
What an attempt, and what a work of the imagination. The Fifth Element' will change the look of science fiction and will probably be imitated for years. more
L.A. Weekly Manohla Dargis
Too long by half, burdened with shabby F/X and offering up some seriously weird performances, this pricy foray into science fiction is a muddle of miscues and narrative bloat--along with a lot of frivolous fun. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
Theres so much high-voltage fun running throughout this comic sci-fantasy -- engineered gleefully by director Luc Besson -- youre hard-pressed to be unaffected. more
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
The future-shock details are witty, the sets and skyscapes spectacular. Besson may not be a good director, exactly, but he's a wizard at retrofitting cliches. more
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Rick Groen
The movie unreels like a depressive in a manic phase, a frenzy of lightning-fast cuts, cuts, cuts. more

I believe there are two kinds of people out there: people who enjoyed The Fifth Element and those who did not. There are many reasons why this is. Most people were on board with the solid cast, special effects, and futuristic premise. I truly believe they could get behind all that using suspension of disbelief and a taste for epic explosions. Then there are the movie lovers who saw all the glaring flaws and annoyances. For example: Chris Tucker. Do I really need to say more? They may also have been weirded out by all the mystery of this so-called Fifth Element, the cartoonish future, and... more

I didn't really think this was going to be a movie that I would be interested in. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how amusing this film was. Very good cast that keeps you entertained throughout. LOVED IT! more

Three hundred years later and pure evil has stirred in the far reaches of space ? and is heading straight for Earth, with traditional weapons unable to stop it. When the Fifth Element is returned, the ship is attacked and seemingly lost ? but scientists are able to recreate the fifth element and are surprised to find it is a beautiful young woman, Leeloo. The Fifth Element isn't Star Wars, but it is a cut above a SyFy Original Movie. The special effects and alien costumes are terrible by today's standards, but the cheesieness of the characters and the environments doesn't ruin the movie. Gary Oldman and Millia Jovocich were great, but the character that Bruce Willis played could have been done as well by nearly any other Hollywood actor that was popular at the time. The guy playing the president was just awful, though. That had to be the least believable movie president, ever. I would have liked the story to go a bit more in-depth about the... more

The fifth Elements is to Besson, as Metropolis is to Fritz Lang with a bit of Scott's Blade Runner thrown in for good measure. Although it's definitely influenced by the two films, Besson has made a truly original futuristic film with the Fifth Element that, with the exception of Chris Tucker, is a near perfect action/adventure film. more
