External critics' reviews

Time Out New York Joshua Rothkopf
Too many digital effects ruin the spell of a tactile world of evil objects scheming your demise. But even a mediocre FD is better than more Jigsaw. more
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
It's no exaggeration to say that the actors have less personality than the pipes, nail guns, grinding gears, decaying beams, and slowly spreading oil spills that are fused, with a kind of empty-dread technical precision, into Rube Goldberg torture devices. more
New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman
If you like your gore hardcore, you'll want to head straight for "Halloween II." But if you're happy to ease around a slightly smaller track, look no further. more
L.A. Weekly Scott Foundas
Ellis and screenwriter Eric Bress even go all meta on us with an "Inglourious Basterds"–esque finale set inside a 3D cinema, though their set pieces never quite muster the giddy brio of "Final Destination 1" and "3" auteur James Wong at his best. more
Los Angeles Times Gary Goldstein
Though this latest entry has an OK sense of humor, moves swiftly enough and sports an effective opening sequence of racetrack destruction that puts its Fusion 3-D technology to good use, it mostly comes off as a particularly flimsy excuse to string together a bunch of gory killings. more
Empire Nick de Semlyen
The novelty factor stops and starts at the 3-D specs: this is a horror movie on tracks, not going anyplace new. Still, there's some inventive grue-splashing as always. more
The Hollywood Reporter Kirk Honeycutt
The new gimmick here is that all the flying body parts and absurd impalements come in 3D. And that's about as inspired as anything gets in this edition. Story and character get chucked to the sidelines as the arena has room for only death scenes. more
The New York Times Jeannette Catsoulis
There used to be entertainment in the dodging and wit in the scripts; now there's 3-D. more
Variety Jordan Mintzer
With an array of gory mayhem only marginally enhanced by 3-D and a plot as developed as a text message, The Final Destination may finally sound the death knell for New Line's near-immortal horror franchise. more
Chicago Reader Cliff Doerksen
The Rube Goldberg variations are repetitive and devoid of the visual snap that helped distinguish James Wong's "Final Destination" (2000). more

Amazon Mark Eremite "This Is A Display Model Only"
At heart, all horror movies operate on the human response to mortality. Your average horror fan gets a thrill from the films because they are a sort of spice for life, they are the seasoning that makes the mundane parts of life all the more richer. Watch a bunch of people get sliced and diced by a monster or madman, and that adrenaline rush makes you feel as if, on some level, you yourself have cheated death. For awhile or more, it's nice to be alive. The FINAL DESTINATION films utilize the same premise, but instead of creating a defeatable or relatable villain, it makes the very act of... more

You know, I tend to find the Final Destination series to be among the SCARIEST of all the horror films out there. This is because the actual horror comes in the way of REAL possibilities. Alright, so they are real possibilities *greatly* exaggerated for the sake of creating a quality horror film, but when you stop and really think about it, the Final Destination series could really mess with your head, and perhaps even permanently screw up your mental state. That is, if you choose to take it seriously and believe in this kind of stuff. You know, believing the death of every single person... more
Amazon Sexy Bachelor
2 hot girls and heaps of dead bodies flying everywhere. Death claims a crowd at a car race and then stalks the remaining survivors in a calculated manner. If you've watched the previous 3 movies, you can already guess what the story line is about. In this "final" sequel, you'll watch gory premonitions and how Death claims its victims: (1) A crowd being burnt and crushed at a car race track. (2) A woman being decapitated by a flying wheel. (3) A racist being dragged, burnt to death and exploding into bits. (4) A mother being killed like the biblical giant Goliath - by a flying pebble. (5) A... more
