External critics' reviews

Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
A tense, taut and expert thriller that becomes something more than that, an allegory about an innocent man in a world prepared to crush him. more
The New York Times Elvis Mitchell
Turns out to be a smashing success, a juggernaut of an action-adventure saga that owes noithing to the past. To put it simply, thi is a home run.
Variety Leonard Klady
A consummate nail-biter that never lags, it leaves you breathless from the chase yet anxious for the next bit of mayhem or clever plot twist. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
Pure energy, a perfect orchestration of heroism, villainy, suspense and comic relief. more
The New Yorker Anthony Lane
It's a pleasure to find a thriller fulfilling its duties with such gusto: the emotions ring solid, the script finds time to relax into backchat, and for once the stunts look like acts of desperation rather than shows of prowess. more
Washington Post Rita Kempley
A flurry of stunts, close shaves and deeds of desperate daring, it easily transcends its television origins to become a stylish pacemaker-buster. more
Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum
Though it's a good half hour too long, this belated, overblown spin-off of the 60s TV show otherwise adds up to a pretty good suspense thriller. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
"Innovative" is not a legitimate description of The Fugitive, but "entertaining" is. more
TV Guide Staff(Not Credited)
The action varies from a show-stopping train/bus wreck of Schwarzeneggerian proportions, to some more ironically staged pursuits which throw a welcome dash of "Tom and Jerry" into the mix. more
Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov
As far as the chase genre goes, there have been worse films (better ones, too). more

This is a movie that wouldn't have been that great if it wasn't for Harrison Ford's amazing performance and a perfectly written role for Tommy Lee Jones who played it top-notch. It is still a very well-crafted film who owes its excellency to the depiction of its two main characters whose tension between them is comparable to the one between De Niro and Pacino in Heat. more

It's just one of those movies that is almost too fun to watch and also backed with a great story and memorable characters. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones are a great team with very different types of performances. I think what makes it great and not just good is the fact that it doesn't repeatedly tell you why its a good movie with overly dramatic touching scenes, it's too busy being entertaining and relevant. more

One of the rare cases of a remake of a TV show is actually better than the original and even among the highlights of the action thriller genre. That's mostly thanks to the breathless direction and the two great adversaries, Harrison Ford as innocent man on the run and Tommy Lee Jones as the merciless FBI hunter, deservedly awarded with an Oscar for his role. The exciting soundtrack, the smart story, as the pieces of the case slowly come together while we follow the wrong traces a few times, it's all so well crafted and excited that those two hours pass like nothing. Excellent stuff. A film... more

A classic. A spectacular edge of your seat action-thriller. Full-on fun. Relentlessly exciting and pulse-pounding. Harrison Ford is teriffic, he keeps in character all the way and never misses a note in the chases or his performance. Tommy Lee Jones is excellent, showing slick humor, capability and stellarness. The suspense and adventure are non-stop. Great action scenes and stunts. A smart, break neck-paced and electrifying ride. An unforgettable adreniline rush. It's well-crafted and perfectly performed. more

There is nothing wrong with pilfering the premises of old TV-shows provided, I think, that they are plot-driven and not character-driven. It would be wrong, for example, to re-make Hogan's Heroes because it was the quirky mix of characters and the acting that made it a success, not the ridiculous plot. The Fugitive, however, is different because the story provided the impetus rather than the cast, who are merely characters rather than personalities (the wrongly-accused doctor, the obsessed marshal, the one-armed man). Because of this, skilled actors such as Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee... more
