Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
The wedding sequence... is a virtuoso stretch of filmmaking: Coppola brings his large cast onstage so artfully that we are drawn at once into the Godfather's world. more
Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington
Brando made Don Vito something we rarely see in movies: a tragicomic villain-hero, a vulnerable hood. The don is so close to a comic character -- the movie itself is so close to comedy -- that Brando's capacity to move us in the role is doubly impressive. At the end, it is the older Godfather's tenderness and sagacity we recall.
San Francisco Chronicle Edward Guthmann
In scene after scene -- the long wedding sequence, John Marley's bloody discovery in his bed, Pacino nervously smoothing down his hair before a restaurant massacre, the godfather's collapse in a garden -- Coppola crafted an enduring, undisputed masterpiece. more
San Francisco Examiner Barbara Shulgasser
A handbook on cinematic lucidity. All events are described clearly. Motives of all the characters are set right there on the table next to the pasta for our consideration. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
The picture is a series of mini-climaxes, all building to the devastating, definitive conclusion... It was carefully and painstakingly crafted. Every major character - and more than a few minor ones - is molded into a distinct, complex individual. more
TV Guide Staff (Non Credited)
The Godfather is a generational saga; it's also an action film; but above all, it catches the imagination of audiences because it suggests that the career of a gangster is not so very different from the career of a businessman or a politician. more
Film Threat Ron Wells
One warning however: James Caan's shoulder hair, when seen on this size screen, may frighten children considerably (you'll at least want to discuss it openly after the show, answering any questions your kids may have in an honest and direct manner). more
Austin Chronicle Marjorie Baumgarten
Just about as great as a movie's ever gonna be... As for the storytellng, The Godfather is an intricately constructed gem that simultaneously kicks ass. more
L.A. Weekly F. X. Feeney
The Godfather traces the arc of this doomed idealism with a beauty that is still fresh. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
A great American picture, full of incredible images and lasting moments. more

"The Godfather" isn't just great because of its plot, its scripting, its acting, or its directing (all of which are top-notch), but it takes film a step further. There's a bounty of underlying themes to be unexpectedly found in the film. The story is interesting. The acting is good. The film is captivating. But there's more to it. There's a compelling element that's so difficult to achieve and so rare to see in modern film. Yes, it's a classic. more

Mafia themes in films never really catch my interest all that much. After all these years I had to give the most critically acclaimed of them a chance, of course. And while my expectations were high (because everyone loves this film) and low (because I don't care about the topic) at the same time, I ended up enjoying it, without putting it on my favorites list. The cast and acting are top notch of course. Brando is fantastic, and Pacino's turn from a decent soldier boy to the next Godfather is outstanding. The plot does move slowly at times but has several really exciting and violent... more

I'm sure many people would agree with me when I say that this is one of the best movies of the 70s. I love it, it's the best gangster movie, it's got that 70s realism and excellent drama and actors who give life to a great story. If you haven't seen it, please go check it out. more

Part one of the grand trilogy of Cinema: the saga of the Corleone famiglia created by Mario Puzo and put on screen by Francis Ford Coppola. This magnificent first act portrays how an unfortunate chain of events leads young Michael Corleone to gradually give up his own life and assume the control of his family's dishonest businesses. more

A masterpiece. A brilliant crime drama. A true classic of movie cinema. Marlon Brando gives totally outstanding performance that is defiantely one of his classic roles. As do Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, they all stand on their own showing they are all capable and compelling movie stars. Al Pacino is terrific, he plays this character with a subtly and sensitivity that escalates into a dark and cold blooded anti-hero. James Caan is explosive, giving a tough and demanding performance. Robert Duvall is brilliant, he shows regret and confidence in his performance as character who... more

Michael: ...Well when Johnny was first starting out, he was signed to this contract with a big-band leader. And as his career got better and better he wanted to get out of it. Now, Johnny is my father's godson. My father went to see the bandleader, with a contract for $10,000 to let Johnny go, but the bandleader said no. So the next day, my father went to see the bandleader again, only this time with Luca Brasi. Within an hour, the bandleader signed the release, with a certified check of $1000. Kay Adams: How did he do that? Michael: My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Kay... more
