So moving, so memorable, so magically produced, it's going to delight millions of movie fans and sweep the Oscars.

Above all a cracking good yarn that earns its laughter, its wonder and its tears. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
As Darabont directs it, it tells a story with beginning, middle, end, vivid characters, humor, outrage and emotional release. Dickensian. more

Darabont follows King's book fairly closely, allowing the audience to steep itself in the setting and characters slowly, like reading a good novel. more
Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov
A touching (and at times horrific) -- albeit overlong -- Christ allegory, that scores not so much on the strength of its convictions as it does on the truly remarkable performances it elicits from the cast. more
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
Has a simple but exceptionally powerful and uplifting emotional lure. more
USA Today Mike Clark
Well acted by an ensemble that leans toward equality for all, Mile carries its long running time extremely well. more
Boston Globe Jay Carr
There's almost too much there, but the three-hour-plus film permits the kind of detailing that not only brings the storytelling to life, but sometimes persuades us we're breathing to its rhythms. more
Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum
Excessive, but I, like Mr. Jingles, can't resist the Christmas-season cheese. more
Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold
A richly textured thriller. more

Frank Darabont's follow up to Shawshank is his second King adaptation and also an improvement on the book. Darabont maneges to relay King's sentiment well but for me, this was always about being a tear jerker. It's quite contrived in places and isn't close to Shawshank's greatness. Still, it's easy to watch and is enjoyable too. more

Stephen King is one of the greatest Horror writers of all time. With stories like "The Shining", he has become categorically associated with the spine chilling. Ironically however, he is responsible for two films which are not as much spine chilling as moving and to a degree inspiring. The first of these is 1994's "Shawshank Redemption" and the other is 1999's "The Green Mile". Staring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, "The Green Mile" is the story of a prison during the depression. In charge of the Electric Chair, Paul Edgecomb (Hanks) and his group of guards, run a tight operation... more

Paul Edgecomb: What did you just do to me? John Coffey: I helped it. Didn't I help it? I just took it back, is all. Awful tired now, boss. Dog tired. Director Frank Darabont adapts another Stephen King novel, set in a prison. The story involves prison guards handling the arrival of a larger than life man accused of killing two little girls. They soon find however, that this man is not only innocent, but has a certain gift of healing within him. Its an interesting story, well made, and well scored, but it is long, coming in just above three hours and doesn't have the same kind of feeling... more

An amazing movie in every way. Absolutely extroadinary. A masterpiece. A movie of pure magic and enjoyment. Powerful, riveting and astonishing. A remarkable, moving, deeply emotional, spirited, funny, unforgettable and wonderful film. It's one of the greatest movies ever maid. The cast is excellent, each one of the actors is picture perfect. Especially Micheal Clark Duncan, he gives an effective, emotionally engaging and magnificent performance. It's one of those great films that you cant help but watch again and again. more

Starring Tom Hanks as a death-row prison guard in 1935, and written by Stephen King, this is an example of story-telling at its finest. My most frequent criticism of films is that they tend to be overlong, but The Green Mile, at a three full hours, needed every precious second in order to pace the story, develop its characters, and lead the viewer into the satisfying conclusion. Despite some gruesome scenes depicting the details of electric chair execution, the film is a testament to the humanity of people. The audience gets to experience the stress of the responsibility of prison guards... more

I had heard that The Green Mile was a good movie, so I decided to go to the theater one night to see it. Even though the movie was long (over 3 hours) I was kept captivated and enjoyed it the whole time. The story centers on the connection between a prison guard played by Tom Hanks and a death row inmate played by Michael Clarke Duncan. They develop a unique relationship based upon a special 'talent' of Duncan. In a way, the story introduces the supernatural and religion from an interesting perspective that strengthens the connection between the characters and the viewer. It would take a... more
