"All right" doesn't begin to describe it. The Kids Are All Right is wonderful. Here is a film that respects and enjoys all of its characters, the give-and-take and recklessness and wisdom of any functioning family unit, conventional or un-. more
San Francisco Chronicle Mick LaSalle
Like her (Cholodenko) other movies, this one has vivid characters and strong performances and flows like a slice of life set in an appealing, interesting world. But this one also has a good story and, if you're paying attention, a distinct point of view. more
Boston Globe Ty Burr
Movies like The Kids Are All Right -- beautifully written, impeccably played, funny and randy and true -- don't come along very often. more
St. Louis Post-Dispatch Calvin Wilson
The Kids Are All Right probably could have used a few more scenes to come to an even more satisfying conclusion. But it's a terrific film anyway. more
New York Daily News Elizabeth Weitzman
Every scene has its highlights, from amusing observations about sex to poignant truths about parenting and partnerships. But what you'll remember most is the exquisitely lovely final scene, in which Cholodenko reminds us that all we need is a single moment of perfection -in a family, or even in a film - to believe that somehow, things will always be all right. more
Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum
This warm, funny, sexy, smart movie erases the boundaries between specialized ''gay content'' and universal ''family content'' with such sneaky authority. more
New York Magazine David Edelstein
The self-satire of The Kids Are All Right is so knowing, so rich, so hilarious, so damn healthy that it blows all thoughts of degeneracy out of your head. more
Los Angeles Times Betsy Sharkey
Witty, urbane and thoroughly entertaining. more
The New York Times A.O. Scott
It is outrageously funny without ever exaggerating for comic effect, and heartbreaking with only minimal melodramatic embellishment. more
Slate Dana Stevens
The movie we've been waiting for all year: a comedy that doesn't take cheap shots, a drama that doesn't manipulate, a movie of ideas that doesn't preach. It's a rich, layered, juicy film, with quiet revelations punctuated by big laughs. more

Had high expectations for this. I support the concept of gay and lesbian couples raising a family. I liked what I had been reading about this movie before seeing it. The fact that Bening and Moore are portrayed as a real/believable couple sounded promising. The fact that the movie deals with married life in a long term relationship drew me to it, since it was unlike so many movies, which have marriage mark the end of the story with a vague happily-ever-after future that we never see. I did like the performances of the two lead actresses. I just found the story and many of the other... more

This part comedy- part drama flick, revolving around the domestic tensions in a lesbian household, can pass as a decently enjoyable one-time-watch. But it's definitely not anywhere nearly worth the rave reviews it got; just another Indie movie that pretends to have more cards up its sleeve than it actually has. more

Expected to like this more than I did - I guess because it had such good reviews. It is actually quite a good movie and the cast are perfect, but it's a little slower than I would have thought and didn't quite hold my attention all the way through, Little things about it bothered me too - it was nice how they portrayed the lesbian couple, but I didn't get the whole watching male porn thing and then the discretion on the part of one of the couple. That to me undermined their relationship a little. Aside from that, nicely done, slow but well made film with believable cast, and a storyline... more

Julianne Moore always blows me away, and her character work in this is top notch. Why she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar is beyond me. Julianne makes herself round-shouldered and doesn't even have her legs shaven. Quite a different character than what she's known for which is why I must give her a nod for her willingness to do characters regardless of what she is known for playing. The film revolves around the relationship of two "Moms" as said by Joni, the daughter of Nic(Anete Bening) and her partner Jules portrayed by Julianne Moore. Their relationship is put in jeopardy when Joni... more

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. I enjoyed certain scenes a lot a lot, but it never completely gelled for me as a full product. I just never believed that this family had huge problems and eventually kind of sort of resolved them. more

I read the reviews and I love the actors, but this movie just did not strike me the way it seemed to others. There was absolutely nothing to hang on to in this film. The characters were unlikable for the most part. The relationship lacked, well...love. The chemistry between the players was not there at all. I adore Julianne Moore, Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo. I thought for sure I was going to adore this film, but it missed me. It felt contrived. I knew what was coming every move and the fact that the central relationship in this movie is lesbian is probably the main reason this movie... more
