Pure, eye-popping pleasure. more
Rolling Stone Peter Travers
A hugely entertaining blend of music, fun and eye-popping thrills, though it doesn't lack for heart. more

Has the resonance to stand not just as a terrific cartoon but as an emotionally pungent movie. more
A timeless classic, full of excitement, humor, witty asides and memorable characters. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
This is the Mickey Mouse factory at its finest, with inventive animation, stirring music and a pride of inspired, almost-human animals. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
Basically what we have here is a drama, with comedy occasionally lifting the mood. The result is a surprising seriousness; this isn't the mindless romp with cute animals. more
ReelViews James Berardinelli
There are moments of fun and humor, to be sure, but the undercurrent is of a far more serious, "adult" nature. The Lion King is primarily about guilt and redemption. more
Variety Jeremy Gerard
A dazzling -- and unexpectedly daring -- addition to the Disney canon. more
Austin Chronicle Robert Faires
It's a thumping good adventure. more
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Rick Groen
For all the undeniable merits, it somehow feels manufactured, and thus, to a degree, calculated - the product not of a collective imagination taking esthetic chances, but of an imaginative collective putting the rivets into a well-wrought plan that can't go awry. more

I know everyone thinks this is the best Disney movie ever made and it's brilliant, but I've never been that crazy about it. It's like Hamlet with lions, which is sorta cool, but I always thought it could have been better. Not that it isn't a good movie, I just don't think it's as fantastic as most people think. more

Like most people, I have a huge soft spot for The Lion King. Sure it's got an overbearing soundtrack, but it's still a masterpiece. What makes it stand the test of time is the characters, design, universal messages and epic story. Flawless voice talents only enhance this (Darth Vader and Jeremy Irons commanding). It's also just really fun and timeless in terms of it's delivery. The jokes that they use aren't dated and it doesn't feel like an overly-nostalgic cornfest like a lot of kid's movies become after fifteen years. more

"A king's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day, Simba, the sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king." The Lion King was a masterpiece when I was a kid, and it's still a masterpiece, now. It's easily in my personal top ten. It's a movie that every breathing person should see. Other than those things, there are really only three other details you need to know about it. 1. A lot of the better animated movies are known for being enjoyable for both kids and adults, but The Lion King may be the very best example of that description. Children will love... more

And I quote... With the death of Mufasa, the father of the lion cub who will someday be king. The Disney animators know that cute little cartoon characters are not sufficient to manufacture dreams. There have to be dark corners, frightening moments, and ancient archetypes like the crime of regicide. "The Lion King," which is a superbly drawn animated film, is surprisingly solemn in its subject matter, although it was considered to be too intense for very young children...and when one thinks long enough on it...it is rightly so... Despite the comic relief from the hyenas, the meerkat... more

I really DO feel the love tonight. Shakespearean in its scope with unrivalled songs and music. Irons is pitch perfect as the sadistic uncle and for once not even the comedy sidekicks annoy. The animation just goes to show what can't be captures in CGI, those bright colours, those impressive landscapes. Though the use of computers to enhance the dramatic and thrilling stampede scene can't be highly praised enough. Father's die, kids blame themselves, it's quite dark for a kids offering but when your having this much fun who gives a flying flook. more

Disney's The Lion King is finally available on DVD. Considered the cream of the crop of all the Disney animated features by many, it is definitely worth owning. I don't think I'll go into the story, which I'm sure most of you know. Chances are you've already seen the movie and are just waiting to own it on a piece of media that won't rot like your VHS tape that probably fell apart by now. Even if Disney released a sub par release of this movie, you'd buy it. Luckily, this is one of the best releases ever. Video and Audio is supreme in this release. Especially vibrant is the 5.1 sound. Of... more
