Cary Elwes is marvelously funny as the hero.
Film Threat Brad Laidman
An effective comedy, an interesting bedtime tale, and one of the greatest date rentals of all time. more
Washington Post Rita Kempley
As a good fairy tale should, The Princess Bride teaches but never preaches. It's a lively, fun-loving, but nevertheless epic look at the nature of true love. more
New Times (L.A.) Luke Y. Thompson
Though not as visually impressive as comparable Terry Gilliam fare such as Jabberwocky, the verbal wit is fast and abundant (abetted with cameos by Billy Crystal, Peter Cook and Mel Smith), and you'd better believe the midnight movie crowd will remember almost all of it. more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
It is filled with good-hearted fun, with performances by actors who seem to be smacking their lips and by a certain true innocence that survives all of Reiner's satire. more
TV Guide Staff (Not Credited)
A hilarious mixture of Errol Flynn swashbuckler and Monty Python send-up...When it comes to pleasing both kids and adults, you can't do much better. more
Washington Post Desson Thomson
A percolating comedy. The laughs may not tear your belly up, but they're constant and they dovetail with the story. more
Chicago Reader Jonathan Rosenbaum
Not even the crude ethnic humor--Billy Crystal's Mel Brooks-ish Miracle Max--pricks the dream bubble, and the spirited cast has a field day. more
Entertainment Weekly Ty Burr
Reiner's penchant for hip little riffs -- Billy Crystal as a yiddish wizard, etc. -- dilutes primal power in favor of genial fun. more
Austin Chronicle Marjorie Baumgarten
Reiner abandons his previous movie's sense of farce and satire for much broader and more innocuous comedy. more

I absolutely love this movie! It's not just a family friendly fantasy adventure comedy, it's also a spoof of movies like it. It's really hilarious and the actors are all great. This is an 80s classic. more

I seem to be the last person to have seen The Princess Bride. Everyone I know who watched it in the late 80s seem to regard it as the greatest film of all time. I liked it, it's very good, well written and very funny but it's not the greatest film in the world, maybe if I had seen it back then I would give it a little more for nostalgia, but at any rate, it's still a great family film. more

It's pure magic with alot of hear and soul. A film with an incredible spirit that always is wonderful to watch. An outstanding fantasy filled with adventure, romance and comedy. One of the best romantic-comedies of the 1980's. An instant classic. A smart, hilarious and exciting movie that i couldn't get enough of. A magical masterpiece. Cary Elwes and Robin Wright Penn are absolutely wonderful. Mandy Patinkin is magnificent. Andre the Giant is a real joy to watch. more

Classical fairy tale adventure story, that didn't age as well, as it could have. Especially the editing in the first half is a bit bumpy, and Mark Knopfler should have been able to come up with a more symphonic soundtrack, not one that sounds like it was composed and recorded on the home keyboard. Sarandon makes for a wonderfully slimy villlain and Patinkin's line as avenger are classic, but the rest of the acting isn't much to write home about (except for Billy Crystal's cameo in make-up). Especially the second half of the film does conjure up a certain charm and lots of humor and ends... more

I never really liked this as a kid, but It's a bit better now. While i'm by no means one of it's cult followers by any means, I can see how it has so many. A lot of the humor is corny to me, but then again young adult males were not the targeted audience. Where this movie shines is the really great fairytale backdrop and lighting. more

Buttercup: We'll never survive. Westley: Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has. During the 80s, when director Rob Reiner was just churning out great movies in general, he managed to make this wonderful fairytale story that is both a classic sort of adventure and a satire of the genre. A kindly grandfather, played by Peter Falk, sits down with his grandson, Fred Savage, and reads him a bedtime story. As the grandfather reads the story, the action comes alive. The story is a classic tale of love and adventure as the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) is kidnapped and held... more
