Fascinating in its depiction of presidential leadership in action. more
Baltimore Sun Chris Kaltenbach
A terrifically engrossing war film in which not a single shot is fired, a movie about shaping events rather than being shaped by them.
Entertainment Weekly Owen Gleiberman
A big, square, rousing political thriller docudrama. more
Seattle Post-Intelligencer William Arnold
A mesmerizingly suspenseful drama. more
New York Daily News Jami Bernard
An excellent movie about a real-life nail-biter, forcefully acted, true to its period and directed with clarity. more
Portland Oregonian Shawn Levy
One of the most exciting American movies about recent political history since, ironically, Oliver Stone's "JFK." more
Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
I call the movie a thriller, even though the outcome is known, because it plays like one: We may know that the world doesn't end, but the players in this drama don't, and it is easy to identify with them. more
Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt
The subject is so gripping that you almost forgive the filmmakers for skewing their material in order to keep Costner's pretty face at the center of everything that happens. more
Philadelphia Inquirer Desmond Ryan
A deeply involving and disturbing movie. more
USA Today Mike Clark
Once this 2 1/4-hour slow-starter finally finds its rhythm, we're reminded of how gripping policy give-and-take around a long rectangular table can be. more

I was amazed that I had not seen this before now (2008). This falls into my realm of great movies - a thrilling, non-stop action, intelligent account of the Cuban missile crisis. I was a kid when it happened, and I had not heard many of the details, but if what the Kennedy administration had to go through was even half of what they showed in this movie, man are we all lucky they were there. more

Fantastic film, positively engrossing. Being Canadian, it was very interesting to really get inside the minds of the leaders that helped steer the world from nuclear war. Greenwood gives a strong, dignified performance worth noting. Definitely recommended, just make sure you're prepared to think. more

Besides the overdone Boston accent, I was drawn into every aspect of this film. Even though the events happened back in 1962, you find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation for what will happen next. For history fans or those who like action movies, this is a great choice. more

Not exactly true to facts but I thought it was good. If you can't be intelligent or enjoy some politics during the bay of pigs era don't bother, it is not for your lesser mind. Imagine if Bush was pres. during these 13 days... how do you think it would go? more

I saw this film in the theaters and was very disappointed that it was not a major hit; although I think I know why. This is definitely a character and dialogue-driven historical drama. Not your run-of-the-mill mind-blowing blockbuster type of film! I believe this film will play very nicely in DVD or video form where it's quiet drama will play itself better. I was VERY disappointed that Bruce Greenwood was not nominated for an academy award (there were rumors this may happen) because I believe his performance was as good if not better than the men that were nominated. His JFK was, in my... more

I remember studying the Cuban Missile Crisis in college, in a class on group dynamics and groupthink. It is such a remarkably involving event, I was a bit apprehensive going into the film, as Hollywood often manages to suck the life out of inherently thrilling stories. Luckily, they get this one right. While it is not historically accurate, I didn't care, because the story this film tells preserves the essence of the event, the tension in the White House as two superpowers danced at the edge of World War III, and the type of individual heroism and leadership it probably took to save us... more
